When it comes to defensive ammunition, there are two big questions that must be answered before a brand or type can be considered. First, is it reliable? Second, how does it perform?

HPR Ammunition burst on the national scene in 2012 with the company's line of defensive ammunition. HPR (High Precision Range) ammunition is 100-percent American-made and engineered to high standards. HPR specifically engineers the 185-grain .45 ACP JHP for maximum velocity and excellent accuracy.

One interesting thing about this ammunition is that it comes in a 50-round box. Most of the time, defensive ammunition comes either in 20- or 25-round packaging; HPR has made sure that even full-capacity magazines—note the plural—can be filled from one box of ammunition. As an additional nice touch, the box has notch for easy opening and a tab on the tray to quickly remove it from the box.

MSRP: $46.99.
