S&W Recall

Smith & Wesson has announced a safety alert for all Response rifles manufactured before Feb. 12, 2024. The company has identified a condition in which an out-of-battery discharge may occur on certain Response rifles if the bolt fails to fully close and the trigger is pulled.

An out-of-battery discharge could potentially rupture an unsupported case, venting gas through the magazine well and upper receiver. This condition could possibly fracture a portion of the receiver. Although this potential condition has only been observed in a very small number of products, out of an abundance of caution Smith & Wesson is asking consumers to immediately stop using any rifles included in this alert and return it to the company for inspection and repair, if necessary.

Owners of a Response rifle included in this Consumer Safety alert should immediately discontinue its use and contact Smith & Wesson. The company will arrange for the return of the rifle for inspection and repair. The firearm will be repaired at no cost and returned as quickly and efficiently as possible. All shipping and repair costs will be covered by Smith & Wesson.

Only those Response rifles manufactured prior to Feb. 12, 2024, are included in this Consumer Safety Alert. A convenient webpage set up by Smith & Wesson helps owners determine whether a gun is subject to this notice. Detailed instructions here include how to locate the date of manufacture on the box received at the time of purchase. Owners who have discarded the original packaging can also enter the firearm’s serial number in a field at the bottom of the page to determine whether it needs to be inspected. If so, owners will be asked to complete a pre-paid return label request form to return the rifle to Smith & Wesson. Enthusiasts can also call customers service by phoning (855) 215-4924.
