We’re down on the range with more new guns for 2021. Today we have the brand-new KelTec P50, which is chambered in 5.7x28 mm, and takes FN P90 magazines. This gives the P50 a capacity of 50 rounds of 5.7, in a large-pistol format.
KelTec’s P50 has a rail for mounting optics on top in addition to rudimentary but usable iron sights integrated into the top rail as well. A charging handle at the rear of the pistol handles administrative loading functions.
The KelTec P50 is pretty wild—there’s nothing quite like this on the market. KelTec is constantly innovating, coming up with new designs that might look a little different but are useful and fun to shoot. Quality is excellent, and the new P50 is no exception. We ran quite a few magazines through the P50 while on the range, and experienced no failures in our admittedly short range time (hey, 5.7 isn’t exactly plentiful…)
Of note on the KelTec P50 is the unique manner in which the magazine is loaded into the pistol. Obviously, using the P90 magazine it doesn’t insert in a standard manner, but instead relies on a hinge at the front of the pistol that lifts up, allowing the magazine to be placed on top for loading. Rounds, as per the P90 operation, are rotated 90 degrees from the magazine into the pistol. It is definitely one of the more quirky offerings for 2021.
MSRP on the KelTec P50 is $995, and the pistol comes with two 50-round magazines. Weight is 3 pounds, 3 ounces; overall length is 15 inches and the barrel length is 9.6 inches. Yes, it is threaded in ½ by 28 TPI for adding a suppressor.
