Eldridge, IA-based LMT Defense, working in partnership with SWISSLOXX AG, secured a significant contract with Swiss armed forces in late February. Under terms of the agreement the companies will supply rifles for the military. The ordered rifles are primarily chambered in 5.56 NATO, although other calibers are included in the contract. Aging SIG 550s, 552s and 553s currently dominate the nation’s military rifle inventory, many now destined for retirement.
“We are honored to support the Swiss armed forces with our advanced small-arms solution,” said Karl Lewis, president of LMT Defense. “This contract reflects our commitment to quality and innovation and strengthens our successful partnership with SWISSLOXX AG.”
Lewis’ company, arguably best known for its M203 Grenade launcher fielded by the U.S. military, is widely recognized as a supplier of quality and reliable small arms for armed forces and law enforcement. In 2009 the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence procured LMT L129A1 rifles for troop use in the Global War on Terrorism. Chambered in 7.62 NATO, it provided an ideal solution for many of the mountaintop-to-mountaintop engagements in Afghanistan.
Other nations that have selected LMT Defense rifles include Estonia and New Zealand, as well as the Jordan Public Security Directorate. The latest agreement, according to the company press release, is a prestigious one. “The Swiss Armed Forces are renowned for their rigorous procurement processes, reflecting the nation’s unwavering commitment to quality and precision,” it reads. “LMT Defense and SWISSLOXX AG were selected based on the exceptional performance, durability, and accuracy of their proposed small arms…”
LMT Defense was established in 1980 by Karl Lewis.
