However, many of these loads are now available for civilian purchase through retailers like Cheaper Than Dirt and Ammunition To Go. They are a great choice if you practice on steel targets.

BallistiClean RHT from Federal is completely lead-free and uses copper-plated primers to identify it as training ammo. It's available in 9 mm, .357 SIG., .40 S&W, 10 mm and .45 ACP. The line also includes two 5.56 NATO loads with the company's jacketed frangible Lite Open Tip Match bullet.

Remington introduced sintered, frangible-bullet pistol ammo for the civilian market this year. Disintegrator CTF (Copper/Tin Frangible) is completely lead-free and is offered in 9 mm, .38 Spl., .40 S&W and .45 ACP. The company claims it is safe to use on targets as close as 5 feet thanks to the bullet's frangible, jacketless construction. Remington also offers a 45-grain .223 Rem. Disintegrator load in its law enforcement line.

Winchester Ranger Frangible SF pistol ammunition uses bullets molded from nylon, copper and tungsten, and is available in 9 mm, .38 Spl., .40 S&W and .45 ACP. There's also a 5.56 NATO load with a frangible, jacketed bullet. All Ranger Frangible SF loads contain lead-free primers.

Handloaders can keep their presses running with jacketed, frangible M/LE RRLP and MPG rifle bullets from Barnes, which are available in .224-, .277-, .308- and .310-inch diameters. SinterFire offers a wide range of frangible components, from a 75-grain bullet for the .380 ACP to a 700-grain bullet for the .50 BMG, as well as buckshot and slugs. Component bullets are available from Black Hills Shooters Supply.
