First Shots: Hornady V-Match Ammunition

Designed for long-range and varmint applications.

We recently had the chance to test some of Hornady's new V-Match ammunition at the Leupold test range in Madras, OR. This new projectile is engineered for long-range and varmint-shooting applications, with an ELD (Extremely Low Drag) designed to minimize wind deflection and velocity drag at longer ranges. Current offerings include Hornady's 22 ARC and 6 mm ARC as well as 6 mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Grendel and 6.5 Creedmoor.

We tested the 80-grain 6 mm Creedmoor bullet at ranges out to 1,500 yards, and found Hornady's claims to be absolutely valid. Achieving first-round hits on target was, while not quite easy (you still have to make the correct wind calls at distances beyond 300 yards or so), definitely doable, as many of the shooters on the line hit with their first rounds out as far as 1,200 yards (and some even farther).

In this video, we chat with Seth Swerczek of Hornady about the development of the V-Match line of ammunition and the VT projectile. Terminal performance as well as long-range accuracy were design parameters of this new line, and our experience proved Hornady's claims to be spot-on. In addition to known-distance targets shot from the prone position, we also ran through some Precision Rifle Series (PRS)-style competition scenarios involving improvised rests and multiple target opportunities. The 6 mm Creedmoor V-Match ammunition performed admirably, making long-range hits a reality even under time constraints.
