Davidson’s, a distributor and wholesaler in the United States’ firearms industry for guns, ammunition, optics and accessories, has partnered up with Heckler & Koch to collaborate on a limited edition version of the HK MR762A1 chambered in 7.62 NATO. The HK MR762A1 is the civilian version of HK’s famous military rifle also in that same caliber, the HK 417, which uses a piston based gas system as opposed to the traditional direct gas impingement invented by Eugene Stoner. AR based designs in 7.62 NATO went through a surge in popularity during the latter part of the GWOT era when most of the fighting was focused across Afghanistan’s hills and valleys and NATO troops wanted rifles in 7.62 NATO with more distance and reach than the typical 5.56 NATO rifle.
The HK MR762A1 is assembled in the United States using both American and German sourced parts. The rifle differs from a traditional AR-10 rifle in that the MR762A1’s gas system makes use of a short-stroke “enclosed” piston system. Under the HK system, ammunition gasses never enter the receiver to help keep the breech area cooler and cleaner and boost reliability. The rifle has a 16.5-inch barrel made from cold-hammer-forged, cannon-grade German steel. As this gun is an exclusive from Davidson’s, it comes in a custom midnight bronze Cerakote finish to set it apart from the regular HK MR762A1. Both the upper and lower receivers in addition to the free-floating, full-length M-LOK handguards come with this midnight bronze finish. The handguard itself has M-Lok slots throughout with the inclusion of a full length M1913 Picatinny rail section at 12 o'clock.
