In recent years, Mossberg brought several innovations to the firearm world. First, the company released its groundbreaking Shockwave design, bringing a non-NFA-regulated, shotshell-firing platform to the market that was more compact and maneuverable than full-sized 12-gauge shotguns. Next, Mossberg expanded the magazine-fed shotgun world with the release of its Model 590M, offering a double-stack detachable magazine on its battle-proven 590 shotgun platform. Now, both of these innovations have been combined in the Mossberg 590M Shockwave.

Built on the proven 590 pump-action shotgun receiver, the Mossberg 590M Shockwave is outfitted with a 15-inch barrel and the unique Raptor birdshead pistol grip from Shockwave Technologies, enabling it to be sold as a compact, non-NFA-regulated, shotshell-firing firearm. Unlike the original Shockwave, which fed from a traditional tube magazine located under the barrel, the 590M Shockwave can accept the world's first double-stack shotgun magazine, with capacity options available in 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-round magazines. The design will chamber 2.75-inch 12-gauge shotshells.

The magazines are constructed from a self-lubricating polymer, which is reinforced with the addition of steel feed lips and overmolded steel shell ramps. A rounded follower prevents canting and binding, and an ASTM-A-228 music-wire spring provides increased reliability when feeding. The floor plate of each Mossberg double-stack shotgun magazine can be removed to facilitate cleaning and maintenance, and all steel components on the magazine body are treated with a black-oxide finish for added durability.

Inside the Mossberg 590M Shockwave, consumers will find notches machined into the lower portion of the receiver. These notches engage with stabilizing ribs located on the magazine body. The receiver also features a heat-treated steel magazine release located directly in front of the trigger guard, allowing for ambidextrous access. The magazine-attachment point is located at the gun's center of gravity, ensuring that the platform offers a balanced feel in a user's hands.

Other features of the 590M Shockwave are borrowed from the time-tested design of the Model 590 receiver, including twin action bars, steel-to-steel lockup, dual extractors, heavy-walled barrel, top-mounted safety selector and a drilled-and-tapped receiver that's ready to receive optics. The overall length of the 590M Shockwave is 27.5 inches and the total weight of the platform, unloaded, is 6.55 pounds. The suggested retail price on the gun is $721.
