Otis Technology, currently the supplier of cleaning kits for the US military, introduced its military-based Defender Series cleaning kit to the US commercial market, aiming at hunters and shooters looking for a compact, do-it-all, caliber-specific kit to carry into the field.
The kit comes in a zippered canvas-like material that appears to be durable enough to withstand trips into the field. The pack features two outside pockets with snap-closures, along with MOLLE webbing for easy attachment to packs. The opposite side of the pack also features a snap-loop that allows for attachment to a belt or a backpack loop. Quick ruler measurements show that the pack measures approximately 9.5 inches in length, 4.5 inches in width and is approximately an inch deep.
The interior of the pack features two identical storage spaces on either face of the pack. Four deep pockets are located at the top of the pack, while six elastic loops are found below the pockets. At the bottom of the pack, two mesh compartments allow for additional storage.
The kit comes with several options for breech-to-muzzle cleaning. For a quick clean, shooters can use the Ripcord, which allows for a one-pass basic bore clean. For more extensive cleaning, the kit features the company's Memory-Flex cables, as well as solid rod sections for use with the kit's chamber brush.
The solid rod sections also work with the included slotted tip and obstruction remover. The obstruction remover features a brass fitting with a concave head that allows shooters to remove snow, mud, stuck cases and stuck bullets. The head is designed to fit over the nose of a 5.56 bullet and press it out of the barrel without mushrooming the round. The concave design also works to avoid damage to the firing pin when driving a stuck round out. The obstruction remover can also be used as a T-handle base.
The slotted tip comes with a number of patches, along with Otis Technology's instructions on using cleaning patches properly. Users must insert the slotted tip into the cuts found in the cleaning patches, and then pinch the patches and push them through the slotted tip for optimum cleaning.
The kit also includes a 5.56 NATO-caliber bore brush, a double-ended AP brush with nylon bristles and a 0.5-ounce tube of the company's new bio-based CLP. The bore brush, chamber brush, slotted tip and obstruction remover all come with their own plastic cases.
